Detailed breakdown
PPF calculator: a quick guide
What is PPF?
The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a 15-year government savings scheme. Deposits of up to ₹1.5 lakh a year earn interest set by the government each quarter, and the interest and maturity amount are tax-free.
How this calculator works it out
Interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month and credited once a year. The calculator assumes you deposit by 5 April, so the full deposit earns interest all year, and it lets you add 5-year extensions after maturity.
An example
With ₹3 lakh already in a PPF account that is 4 years old and ₹1.5 lakh deposited each year at 7.1%, the account would be worth about ₹31,87,090 at maturity in 11 years. Extending for 5 more years with the same deposit takes it to about ₹54.17 lakh.
Good to know
The rate used here is 7.1%. The government revises it every quarter, so check the current rate.
Depositing after the 5th of a month loses that month’s interest on the new money.
Partial withdrawals and loans are allowed only after certain years; the money is otherwise locked in.
How it's calculated
PPF interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month and credited once a year. Depositing before 5 April means your full deposit earns interest all year, which this calculator assumes.
Common questions
Is PPF tax-free?
Yes. Deposits qualify for Section 123 (old 80C) under the old regime, and both interest and maturity are fully tax-free.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. You must apply within one year of maturity to continue depositing.
