Detailed breakdown
How it's calculated
New regime slabs for FY 2026-27: nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% for each ₹4 lakh band up to ₹24 lakh, and 30% above. A rebate makes tax nil for taxable income up to ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief just above it, and the standard deduction is ₹75,000. Old regime slabs: nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh at 60+, ₹5 lakh at 80+), 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh and 30% above, with a ₹50,000 standard deduction and rebate up to ₹5 lakh. Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh, with marginal relief, and a 4% cess is added.
Common questions
Did Budget 2026 change the tax slabs?
No. FY 2026-27 uses the same slabs, rebate and standard deduction as FY 2025-26, now under the Income Tax Act, 2025.
Is income up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free?
For salaried people under the new regime, yes: ₹12 lakh plus the ₹75,000 standard deduction gives zero tax, as long as there's no special-rate income like capital gains.
When does the old regime work better?
Usually only when you claim large deductions such as HRA, a home loan, full 80C and NPS. Enter yours above to compare.
