Detailed breakdown
How it's calculated

Equity shares and equity funds held over 12 months are long-term: gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year are taxed at 12.5%. Held for 12 months or less, they are taxed at 20%. Debt funds bought after 1 April 2023 are taxed at your slab rate. Gold ETFs and other listed securities are long-term after 12 months and taxed at 12.5%. Gold funds, physical gold, property and other assets are long-term after 24 months and taxed at 12.5% without indexation; otherwise at your slab. A 4% cess applies on top.

Common questions

Does the ₹1.25 lakh exemption apply to each sale?

No. It is a single yearly limit across all long-term equity gains, which is why you can enter how much you have already used.

Can I reduce capital gains tax?

Options include harvesting gains up to ₹1.25 lakh each year, setting off losses, and for property, reinvesting the gain in another house or in specified bonds within the time limits. Speak to a tax adviser for your case.
