Detailed breakdown
Emergency fund calculator: a quick guide
What is an emergency fund?
An emergency fund is money set aside for a job loss, medical bill or urgent repair, so you don’t have to borrow or sell long-term investments at a bad time.
How this calculator works it out
Emergency fund = (monthly household expenses + monthly EMIs) × months to cover
An example
With ₹45,000 of monthly expenses, ₹15,000 of EMIs and six months of cover, the target is ₹3,60,000. With ₹1 lakh already set aside and ₹15,000 added each month, you would reach it in about 1 year 6 months.
Good to know
Many planners suggest three to six months of expenses. A single income, self-employment or dependent parents are common reasons to keep more.
Emergency funds are commonly kept somewhere you can reach within a day or two, such as a savings account, sweep-in FD or liquid fund.
Health insurance reduces how much you need to keep for medical emergencies.
How it's calculated
The target is your monthly expenses plus EMIs, multiplied by the number of months you want covered.
Common questions
Should health insurance replace an emergency fund?
No. Health insurance covers hospital bills, but an emergency fund also covers job loss, repairs and other surprises. You need both.
